Subject:- Avian Influenza  reported in Poultry from Jalagaon  district, Maharashtra – status report.

 

 

Deptt of Animal Husbandry issued Notification on 14th March, 2006 declaring outbreak of Avian influenza in the following villages of Jalagaon district:

q       These villages have substantial backyard poultry of about 75,000. Deptt of Animal Husbandry has initiated control and containment operations in 10 kilometer radius of the four villages.

 

q                     MOHFW has deputed a three member Central Rapid Response Team on 14.3.2006. The team has reached  Jalagaon and is holding meetings with the district authorities to consolidate future course of action.

q       The Rapid Response Team of MOHFW carried with them Tamiflu, sample collection kits and personal protective equipments.

q       The affected villages have an estimated population of 38,000. the 10 KM surveillance zone around these villages have an estimated population of 3,00,000.

q       The state has pressed into service 40 public health teams for active house to house  surveillance and for IEC activities.

q       Two hospitals near to the suveillance zones are being strengthened. Twenty bed Isolation ward along with 4 icu beds is being set up at the 100 bed Chopda Sub District hospital. This would cater to the requirement of the Surveillance zones around Hated and Sawada villages. The 30 bed Community Health Centre at Nhavi is being strengthened by putting up 10 bed isolation unit and would cater to Salva and Marul villages.

q       The district hospital at Jalagaon would be the referral hospital for both these isolation units.

q       The Central Rapid Response Team would  sensitize the cullers on proper of use of personal protective equipments and self care. Health status of cullers would be  monitored.  

q       MOHFW has dispatched additional 4000 doses of Tamiflu on 12th March. As of now the state has stock of Tamiflu and PPE. Additional requirement of PPE, if any is being worked out.

q       The situation is being closely monitored and under control. 

 

q       There are however no reports of any human cases of Avian Influenza.
