6.15. National Academy of Medical Sciences

6.15.1. The National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS) was established in 1961 as a registered society with the objective of promoting the growth of medical sciences. It recognises talent and merit throughout the country in the form of election of Fellows and Members of the Academy.

6.15.2. As on 31st October, 1998, the Academy had on its rolls 7 Hony. Fellows, 659 Fellows and 1,494 Members.

6.15.3. Nine Orations and Six Awards have been instituted by the Academy. For the year 1997-98, 9 Orations and 5 Awards were awarded to the Medical Scientists after scrutiny.

6.15.4. Col.Sangham Lal Memorial Oration 1996-97 was delivered by Dr.K.Mathangi Ramakrishnan, President, National Academy of Medical Sciences on 8th August, 1998.

6.15.5. Duringtheyear 1998-99 (Upto 31st October, 1998), various associations, professional bodies and medical colleges have been sanctioned financial assistance by NAMS for conducting 35 seminars/workshops etc.

6.15.6. The CME programme also covers Human Resource Development by sending Junior Scientists to Centres of excellence by providing training in advanced methods and techniques. 84 medical scientists/teachers have completed the training in selected areas at various specialised Centres.
