6.17.1. Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research is financed and administered by the Government of India, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, through the Directorate General of Health Services. The primary functions of this Institute are patient care, teaching, training and research.
6.17.2. Patient Care : The Institute has a 860 bedded hospital attached to it consisting of various medical and surgical specialities and super specialities. Free services are provided to the poor patients including CT Scan, Radio-therapy treatment given for cancer patients, Open Heart Surgery and implantation of permanent pacemakers etc.
6.17.3. Many new equipments have been procured for the better patient care services, some of them are: (1) Anaesthesia Workstation Part-II, (2) G.I. Endoscope, (3) Oscillator Ventilator, (4) Automatic Tissue Processor, (5) Video Processor, (6) Polygraph and EMG-EP Unit, etc.
6.17.4. An Operation Theatre complex has been opened at Rural Health Centre at Ramanathapuram and Minor Surgical and Obstetrics and Gynaecology procedures are done there for the benefit of Rural People. The number of CT Scan done so far is 1,535.
6.17.5. The Deptt. of Orthopaedic Surgery has started bone bank and tumour clinics and introduced shoulder Arthroscopy Surgical Procedure.
6.17.6. Breast Cancer screening and surgical gastroentereology Clinics have been added to the surgery department.
6.17.7. The details of the health programmes done by the Urban and Rural Health Centres are as follows:
6.17.7.(i) Health Care Mobile Clinic Camps: Five 5 days-campus held during 1998-99(till 31st October, 1998) and Four 1 day- campus.
6.17.7.(ii) Nine villages covered during 1998-99(till 31st October, 1998).

6.17.9. Budget: The total budget provision for the year 1998- 99 in respect of the Institute and the Hospital is Rs. 44.67crore (both under Plan & Non-Plan).
6.17.10. Capital: The following construction work have been completed during the year for the better facilities for the Students/Staff/Patient Care. (i) Construction of New Bore well with pump room and PVC pipe line. (ii) Providing street light. (iii) Construction of new Type-V quarters (1 4 Nos.) (iv) Construction of Pharmacy block. (v) Construction of new Casualty block with emergency about to be completed shortly.
6.17.10.(i) The following works are under progress/about to be taken. (i) Construction of Administrative block. (ii) Construction of open air stage at Lister House Square for the Cultural Activities of the students.
6.17.11. Teaching and Training: The Institute runs medical and paramedical training courses, leading to MBBS, MD/MS, M.Ch. and Diploma in various specialities, M.Ch. (Genito-Urinary Surgery), M. Ch. (Cardio Thoracic and Vascular Surgery), M.Sc. in Medical Biochemistry, B.Sc. (Medical Laboratory Technology), B.M.R.Sc., M.R.O./M.R.T. training and Certificate/ Diploma course in French. The total student strength in various courses is 652, of which 208 are women and 188 of them from SC/ST category.
6.17.11.(i) Students admitted to the above courses are selected purely on the basis of merit through All India Entrance Exami- nations conducted for the purpose.
6.17.12. Library: The Library Building which is fully Air- Conditioned has 29,875 books and 367 Journals. Back Volumes of Medical Journals are available from 1930 onwards and the number of bound volume has exceeded from 19,000. A Book Bank of SC/ST Students having 3,256 books is also available.
6.17.13. Research Projects: The Institute is actively engaged in research activities with the funds drawn from mural and extra-mural sources like I.C.M.R., U.G.C., W.H.O., etc.
6.17.14. The National Teachers Training Centre at JIPMER and Disaster Management services have performed well during the current year.
6.17.15. Internet services, CD-ROM Services and E-Mail Service have been installed in the Library of the Institute.
