6.19. Lady Hardinge Medical College & Smt.S.K. Hospital and Kalawati Saran Childrens' Hospital, New Delhi

6.19.1. The Lady Hardinge Medical College & Smt. S.K. Hospital was established in the year 1916 and was taken over by the Government of India w.e.f. 1.2.78 in pursuance of the provisions of the Lady Hardinge Medical College & Hospital (Acquisition and Misc. Provisions Act, 1977). The Kalawati Saran Children's Hospital was established in 1956 for providing medical care services exclusively for paediatric patients.

6.19.2. Lady Hardinge Medical College: The College has completed its 82 years of existence. For the academic year 1998-99, the number of students admitted so far for MBBS course is 130. The total number of post-graduate students and undergraduate students at present on roll is 199 and 786 respectively. For the undergraduate course, foreign students, including commonwealth countries under General Cultural Scholarship Scheme and Self Financing Scheme are also admitted.

6.19.3. Patient Care, Teaching Undergraduate and Post- Graduate Students Research and Extra Curricular Activities: The total bed strength of Smt.Sucheta Kripalani Hospital at present is 836. Kalawati Saran Childrens' Hospital has a total bed strength of 350 beds including 30 beds in the Nursery of Smt. Sucheta Kripalani Hospitals.

6.19.4. Kalawati Saran Childrens' Hospital has a full fledged department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation for imparting curative, preventive and rehabilitation services to handicapped patients. Under the external assistance from Japan International Cooperation Agency, a four-storey building has been constructed for augmentation of the facilities at this Hospital and addition of 150 more beds.

6.19.5. Special Services at Smt.S.K. Hospital: The Institution provides the following round the clock special services, in addition to the routine patient care and laboratory services:

(i) E. C. G.

(ii) X-Ray Service in Smt. S.K. Hospital.

(iii) Laboratory services: Blood Bank, Haematology, Biochemistry

(iv) Embalming of Dead Bodies.

(v) Police (Autopsies): Post-martum facilities for the zones under the 7 Police stations which have been attached to this Hospital, are being provided.

(vi) I.C.U.: A modern intensive care unit is functioning under the Department of Anaesthesia with all required facilities and attached laboratory.

(vii) Drug De-Addiction Unit: This unit is a designated centre, set up by the Government of India for early detection and treatment of all types of addictions and has indoor and outdoor faclities.

(viii) An Accident & Emergency Unit.

(ix) 24 hours Biochemistry Laboratory is functioning in the new building.

(x) Nursing Home.

(xi) Anti-rabies and Diabetic clinic have been started with available resources.

(xii) Laboratories of the Hospital have been upgraded with installation of latest electronic equipments, like Auto Analyser, ELISA, Echocardiogram Tread Mill, etc.

(xiii) Hormone assay Lab. has started functioning in Department of Anatomy.

6.19.6. Laboratory Investigations: 6,68,997 investigations were performed in Smt. S.K. Hospital in Cytology, Chemical Pathology, Haematology, Surgical Pathology, Clinical Biochemistry, Pathology, Microbiology Departments during the year 1998-99 (1.4.98 to 31.10.98).

6.19.7. Blood Bank: 5,266 units of blood were collected and 7,098 units of blood were issued in 1998-99 from 1.4.98 to 31.10.98.

6.19.8. Important Reasearch Activities: Following are the important research activities being carried on in the Institute: (i) WHO Collaborating Centre for reference and training in Streptococcal disease from September, 1989, ICMR advanced Centre Laboratory for Studies in Streptococcal diseases.(ii) Advanced Centre for Research on Rheumatic and Rheumatic Health Diseases. (iii) AIDS Surveillance.

6.19.8.(i) Besides the above, the College is actively engaged in 129 projects sponsored by WHO, ICMR and UGC. 92 research projects are supported by the College. During the year 1998, 27 research publications were published in National and International journals.

6.19.9. Training: The College is actively involved in imparting training to various categories of medical and paramedical personnel, such as training to doctors under post-mortum programme of UNFPA Projects and Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, New Delhi.

6.19.10. School of Nursing: The School of Nursing run by the Institution has a total strength of 161 students. Students from Dr. R.M.L. Hospital are given practical training in midwifery. It also provides one month training to the students of Lady Reading Health School and R.A.K. College of Nursing, New Delhi.

6.19.11. Augmentation of Manpower: With a view to strengthen the Emergency Services, the Ministry has sanctioned creation of additional posts of 14 Senior Residents in the Hospital. Additional 26 posts have also been created in various grades, in the Departments of Anatomy, Physiology, Pharmacology, Forensic Medicine, Pathology, and Social & Preventive Medicine and Animal House. Three posts have also been created for the establishment of Radiotherapy and Oncology wing.
