6.21.16. Aids Division:
6.21.16.(i) Diagnostic services (HIVserology): During 1998-99 (April 98 to October 98), a total of 1,038 persons belonging to different high risk groups had been tested for HIV, of whom 99 had been found positive for HIV. In addition, a total of 606 pre tested reactive blood samples referred from other centres were tested of whom 500 were found positive.
6.21.16.(ii) Evaluation of Diagnostic test kits: 6 (six) HIV test kits have been evaluated during the period under reference regarding their sensitivities, specificities and delta values etc.
6.21.16.(iii) Testing of blood products: 79 different blood products as referred from DCI (Govt. of India) were tested and all found negative for HIV.
6.21.16.(iv) Training of manpower: All together 24 Lab. Technicians from AFTC, Delhi have received training on HIV testing during August-98 to October-98. The programme will be continued up to 1st quarter of 1999.

6.21.16.(v)(a) S.T.D. Serology: The following Serological Tests for STDs viz. Syphilis, Chlamydia, HSV-I&HSV-2 & HCV were done during the period :

6.21.16.(v)(b) Antimicrobial Surveillance Programme (GASP): Four cases of urethral discharge having history of sex exposures with CSWs were diagnosed to be due to gonococcal infection by direct microscopy of gram stained smears and two biochemical tests, viz. oxidase test & superoxal test. Culture & Sensitivity tests were done.
6.21.16.(v)(c) Direct Microscopy: 45 smears from vaginal discharge cases (taken in a community STD clinic) were examined and findings recorded.
6.21.16.(v)(d) Opportunistic infection in AIDS Patients : Four out of ten stool samples from AIDS patients were found to be positive for Cryptosporidium infection, (stool samples were examined by formal ether concentration followed by modified AFB Staining and also by fluorescent microscopy).
6.21.16.(v)(e) HIV Counselling Services: A total of 77 persons were given HIV counselling prior to their HIV testing.
