6.23. The All India Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Mumbai

6.23.1. The All India Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Mumbai has been functioning in the field of Rehabilitation Medicine since 1995. The Institute is a pioneer Institute in the whole of South Asia with facilities for medical rehabilitation services(with 45 bedded hospital, operation theatre for reconstructive surgery, facilities for

pathology and X-ray investigations) which cover Rehabilitation Nursing, Physi-therapy, Occupational Therapy, Medical Social Work, Vocational Guidance -Evaluation, Adjustment, Training and supply of Prosthetic and Orthotic appliances. The Institute has a research society. The Institute undertakes training at Graduate and Post-Graduate level and research in Rehabilitation Medicine. Over the past few years, the Institute has been trying to reach the disabled population in rural areas, with particular emphasis on areas where Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe population is high, through community based rehabilitation approach. These activities are conducted in collaboration with voluntary and semi-governmental and focal organisations.

6.23.2. The Institute is a nodal agency for implementing Pilot Project on Medical Rehabilitation, a Central sector health project launched in November, 1995. The Institute is also involved in District Rehabilitation Centre Project and Regional Rehabilitation Training Centre is functioning in All India Institute of Physical medicine and Rehabilitation since its inception. The Master Trainer of this Center conduct training courses for rehabilitation professionals in various disciplines, who ultimately work in the rural areas in this field.

6.23.3. The Institute runs M.Sc. courses in Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy and B.Sc. course in Prosthetic and Orthotic Engineering. It also conducts post-graduate diploma in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation course of M.S./M.D. doctors. The Institute is also recognised by the National Board of Examination, New Delhi for DNB(PM&R). There are also short-term (4 weeks) certificate courses for M.B.B.S., Homeopathic, Ayurvedic and Unani doctors. Ten vocational courses on turning and bench fitting, tailoring, painting, screen painting, composing and printing, photography, clerical, carpentry, maintenance and repairs of electric and domestic appliances and for workshop attendants are also conducted by the Vocational Training and Guidance Department of the Institute.

6.23.4. During 1998-99, 24,782 old & new cases were managed through case conference, follow-up, myopathy, hand, prosthetic, disability, brace and scoliosis clinics on out-patient basis and 2,001 operations were performed. Under the Pilot Project on Medical Rehabilitation, 9 camps covering 1,421 beneficiaries were organised. A Rehabilitation Unit with Physiotherapy Department in Civil Hospital, Alibag was established on 22.8.1998.

6.23.5. During 1998-99, abudget provision of Rs.2.07 crore under Plan and Rs.2.59 crore under Non-Plan has been made for the Institute.
