6.24. All India Institute of Speech and Hearing, Mysore

6.24.1. All India Institute of Speech and Hearing, Mysore, the first of its kind in the whole of South-East Asia, came into being on August 9, 1965 under the aegis of the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and is wholly financed by the Government of India. The Institute is registered as a Society under the Societies Registration Act XXII of 1960 (Punjab Amendment) Act 1957, and is functioning as an autonomous body.

6.24.2. The main objectives of the Institute as enshrined in the Memorandum of Association are as follows: (i) Training; (ii) Research; (iii) Clinical Services; (iv) Public Education.

6.24.3. Training: Six Departments in the Institute viz. Audiology, Clinical Psychology, Electronics, Otorhinolaryn- gology, Speech Pathology and Speech Sciences are actively involved in the training programme.

6.24.4. University examinations were conducted for the B.Sc. and M.Sc. students.

6.24.5. Fresh admission to under-graduate and post-graduate courses for the year 1998-99 were completed.

6.24.7. Workshop: A National workshop was conducted on "Teacher-student ratio in the field of Speech and Hearing on 6.8.98.

6.24.8. Clinical Services: For every patient who seeks professional consultation, a comprehensive evaluation is carried out. The professional/technical staff provide supervision to student trainees in their practical and clinical work. The sophisticated technical equipment are available to put to optimal use towards achieving the research goals. The details of clinical services are provided on Fact Sheet next page

6.24.9. Extension services: In collaboration with the FPAI clinical services have been extended to rural population. Hearing screening and identification of speech-language problems have been conducted at paediatric units and schools, as shown in the following table:

6.24.10. Staff along with the students visited various rural and urban areas to create public awareness and early identification of speech and hearing problems. Public education pamphlets were also distributed on spot.

6.24.11. Research Activities: Various research projects have been undertaken by the Departments.

6.24.11(iii) Paper presented/published: A total no. of 6 scientific papers were presented at various National and International conferences and 4 scientific papers were pub- lished in various National and International Journals.

6.24.12. Public Education And Material Development:

1. Two audio cassettes on Production of Esophageal Speech and Voice Problems.

2. Language games for Learning Disabled Children.

3. Booklet on Pre-school Curriculum.

4. Home-training programme for M.R and Misarticulation in English.

5. Communication board and therapy kit for C. P.

6. Charts for Language teaching.

7. Translation of "Speech and Language Stimulation Techniques" in Hindi.

8. 18 charts for public education.

6.24.13.Library And Information Centre: It is nucleus for the information retrieval in the specialised area of speech and hearing in the country. It could be made as a National Data Base in the speciality It is equipped with the following:

6.24.15. Other Activities The 33rd Anniversary of the Institute was celebrated on 9th August. Sadbhavana and Communal Harmony Fortnight was observed from 20th August to 5th September. The NSS Unit planned a I 1 point programme to inculcate the spirit of communal harmony. Hindi Fortnight was conducted successfully from 1.9.98 to 15.9.98. The Video Shooting on the activities of the Institute was completed. A cassette of 25 minutes is awaiting telecast on the National hook-up. The Institute participated in the National Exhibition at the Pragati Maidan, New Delhi under the concept of "Aids and Appliances for the Handicapped." To increase public awareness of the facilities available, Exhibitions were arranged for the school children, NCC cadets, Bank employees and their families. Get-together of hearing aid users were held to re-orient the Hearing Aid Users about the remedies available for their problems.
