6.25. Central Institute of Psychiatry, Ranchi

6.25.1. The Central Institute of Psychiatry is directly under the control of Directorate General of Health Services and Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, New Delhi and it caters to the needs of people from all over India and the two neighbo- uring countries of Nepal and Bhutan. It conducts Post-Graduate courses in Psychiatry, Clinical Psychology and Psychiatric Social Work and Psychiatric Nursing, leading to the award of M.D. and D.P.M. in Psychological Medicine, M. Phil in Clinical Psychology and Psychiatric Social Work, Ph.D. in Clinical. Psychology and D.P.N. in Psychiatric Nursing. The Institute has five-fold activities:-

(i) To provide diagnostic, therapeutic and rehabilitative services to the mentally ill both at the institutional and community levels.

(ii) To provide Post-Graduate Psychiatric training in the field of Psychiatry and allied fields like Clinical Psychology, Psychiatric Social Work and Psychiatric Nursing.

(iii) To conduct research in behaviour sciences.

(iv) To extend mental health services to the rural tribal areas.

(v) To impart training in behavioural sciences to the medical and paramedical personnel from other organizations.

6.25.2. The hospital provides quality psychiatric facilities to patients of all age groups. In addition to the 643 inpatient beds, it provides emergency services, special clinics for Epilepsy, drug de-addiction and sexual disorder, besides providing family therapy.

It has a well-equipped Occupational Therapy Department which imparts occupational training to the patients in skills like Carpentery, Weaving, Painting, Cane Work, Tailoring etc. Recreational activities like games, TX, films, library facilities, cultural activities and religious instructions and services in the different faiths are freely available to all the patients.

6.25.3. Psychiatric Services: Community Psychiatry Services in the community is provided through extension services at two centers - one in West Bokaro, an industrial area and the other at Public Sector Coal Field Hospital, Ranchi.

6.25.3.(i) Consultancy Psychiatric Services is also provided at the voluntary organization day care centre (Deepshikha) for mentally handicapped in Ranchi City.

6.25.3.(ii) Rural Mental Health Clinic: In keeping with the National Mental Health Programme Policy of providing minimum mental health care to all and specially vulnerable and underprivileged sections of the populations, a clinic is run in rural area Mandar 40 K.M. away from the Institute, once a week. Besides providing Psychiatric services to the patients, the visit to this clinic is utilized to disseminate mental health knowledge to P.H.C. doctors, MPHW, village Health Guides and Community leaders.

6.25.6. Research Activities: 26 Research projects were taken up during the period. 14 Research projects completed during the period.

6.25.7. Publications: 17 Research papers were published/ submitted for publication during the period.

6.25.8. Use of Hindi: Hindi is being increasingly used in the official work of the Institute.

6.25.9. Guest Faculty :16 visiting faculty from other Institutions such as Nimhans, Bangalore, BHU Varanasi, Patna University, Kurukshetra University visited the Institute and delivered lectures to the P.G. Students.
