ALL INDIA INSTITUTE OF HYGIENE AND PUBLIC HEALTH
6.34.1. The All India Institute of Hygiene and Public Helth (AIIH&PH), Calcutta, was established in 1932 with the assistance of Rockfeller Foundation. AIIH&PH continues to be a leader in pursuit of its mandate for Human Resource Development in the field of Public Health.
6.34.2. Objectives: The objectives of the Institute are:
(i) To develop health manpower by providing post-graduate training facilities;
(ii) To conduct research relating to various health problems and disease in the community;
(iii) To provide the support services in urban(slum) and rural areas; and
(iv) To support and guide various programmes at National level.
6.34.3. Institutional Set-up: The Institute has eleven academic departments and two field practice areas at Urban Health Centre, Chetla, Calcutta and Rural Health Unit and Training Centre, Singur, District Hooghly. The Institute has a well qualified and highly experienced teaching faculty.
6.34.4. Major Activities:
6.34.4.(i) The celebration of 50th Anniversary of Independence saw the culmination event with the National Seminar of "50 years of Public Health in India, Problems and prospects" between 6th & 8th August, 1998 along with 3 symposia on Na- tional Health Policy, Environmental Policy and Health Service Management.
6.34.4.(ii) A workshop on "Hospital Waste Management" sponsored by Ministry of Health & Famioly Welfare was organised on 10-12- 98.
6.34.4.(iii) Some of the faculty members acted as Experts and Consultants for various organisations, attended National and International Conferences held in India and abroad.
6.34.4.(iv) During the period the Institute has conducted various educational programmes and out of 132 students appeared in the various University Examinations, 107 were successful giving an overall 88.6% of passes.
6.34.4.(v) 164 students gained admission to various Master and Diploma courses of this Institute in this academic year.
6.34.5. Research: A large number of research projects are being conducted at this Institute. These schemes have beel funded by the Central and State Governments, and also by several national and international agencies, in the areas of Envirom-nental Health, Public Health, Nutrition, Diseases Control & Management, Disaster preparedness, Micronutrient Deficiency Control etc.
6.34.6. Some of the important Research projects undertaken by this Institute were as follows:
(i) Water toxicity-Bioassay tests, sponsored by IDRC, Canada
(ii) Water quality Surveillance Programme in five districts in different states in India.
(iii) A study on extent of parasitic infections and their linkage with iron deficiency anaemia sponsored by IDRC, South Asia, New Delhi.
(iv) A comprehensive, Capacity Building, training and awareness generation programme to tackle the Arsenic problem in West Bengal, sponsored by WHO & Government of India.
(v) Introducing Quality Assurance in under Five Care-An exploratory study.
(vi) Eye Symptomatology and Eye Care Seeking Behaviour in School age Children in a slum of Calcutta.
(vii) A study on impact of Health Education on feeding and weaning practices of newborn.
(viii) A Study on development of a training programme for school teacher on school health services.
(ix) Arsenic toxicity study with respect to arsenic contaminated ground water resources of West Bengal.
(x) Study of Micronutrient status of CARE vs Food feed children as compared to state provided local food fed children West Bengal.
(xi) Linkage between parasitic infection, latrine use rates anaemia prevalence in West Bengal.
(xii) KABP study of micronutrient intake situation in West Bengal.
(xiii) lodised salt intake and body iodine status in West Bengal(9 districts).
(xiv) lodised salt intake and body iodine status in school children in Calcutta.
(xv) Incidence of Neisseria gonorrhoea amongst commercial Sex Workers, Calcutta jointly with Department of Epidemiology.
(xvi) Drinking water quality testing on sample from different areas of Calcutta and Howarh according to the order of Hon'ble High Court of Calcutta.
(xvii) Incidence of Hookworm infection and its relation with iron deficiency anaemia-a study by IDRC.
6.34.7. Consultancy: The Institute provides technical and consultancy services to various National and International organisations. Some of the important organisations to which the consultancy services were rendered include Department of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of West Bengal, Coal India Ltd., Eastern Railways, National River Conservation Directorate, Ministry of Environment & Forests, Government of India, Ministry of Rural Areas and Employment, Government of India, UNICEF, West Bengal Pollution Control Board.
